PRINCIPLES AND THEORIES OF AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
Holistic Healing, Energy Balance, Disease Understanding, and Herbal Practice
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Principles and Theories of African Traditional Medicine (ATM), offering learners a deep understanding of how health, illness, and healing are viewed within African indigenous knowledge systems. Rooted in centuries of observation, practice, and lived experience, African Traditional Medicine approaches health as a holistic balance of the body, mind, spirit, and community, rather than the treatment of isolated symptoms.
Throughout this course, learners will explore the theoretical foundations of holistic health, including African cosmological views of life, the interconnectedness of human beings with nature, ancestors, and society, and the role these relationships play in wellbeing. The course also examines energy-based theories, such as concepts of heat and cold, balance and imbalance, and how these forces influence health and disease.
In addition, the course introduces the traditional classification of diseases, covering physical, spiritual, environmental, and social causes of illness. Learners will gain insight into how African traditional medicine practitioners diagnose conditions by observing physical signs, emotional states, lifestyle patterns, and spiritual influences. The course further explores plant-based medicine, focusing on the principles behind herbal selection, preparation, and therapeutic use, rather than memorization of remedies.
Designed for beginners, students of health sciences, researchers, and anyone interested in African knowledge systems, this course bridges traditional wisdom with modern understanding. By the end of the course, learners will have a solid conceptual framework for appreciating African Traditional Medicine as a structured, rational, and evolving medical system with relevance in today’s world.
